520 _aThe scope of this plant design is to determine the feasibility of the production of toluene from benzene. The methylation of benzene is a one step process wherein benzene is reacted with methanol to produce toluene and water. Benzene and methanol is made to react in a fixed bed reactor with the use of HZSM-5 catalyst at 220°C. HZSM-5 zeolite is a catalyst that promotes a high methylation rate. The product stream which contains toluene, unreacted benzene, unreacted methanol and water is subjected to fractional distillation for separation. The unreacted reactants are recycled back into the inlet stream of the reactor. The plant aims to produce 100,000 tons of toluene per annum. This production rate contributes to 0.51% of the market share. It is forecasted that by 2016, the world production would be about 25,000,000 tons and the supply around 19,603,561 tons with the 51.4% of that coming from Asia-Pacific. The total breakdown of raw materials is about Php 2,761,877.11. The total capital investment is Php 7,743,505,739. The wastes produced by the plant are the spent catalyst, waste water, chemical spills, chemical leakages, chemical and solid wastes from plant shutdowns.
