- Cebu City CIT-U 2015
Soil erosion is one of the main problems that people living in mountainous barangays are facing. One of the solutions to the problem is installing a geomat for slope protection. Geomat is a three-dimensional mat use for stabilization of slope.
This research study entitled "An Investigative Study on the Suitability of Abaca Fibers for use as a Geomat in Barangay Toong, Cebu City" focuses on the installation of geomat made from abaca fibers and its effectiveness in minimizing the soil erosion. Barangay Toong is one of the mountainous barangays of Cebu City.
Two geomats having a dimension of 4m x 2m were installed in one of the sloping areas in Barangay Toong, Cebu City. Abaca geomats effetiveness were tested based on the data collection by simple comparison on different in mass of collected soil in a sloping area with geomat and a sloping area without geomat for a period of seven weeks. Since this is an investigative research, output of this study was based on the data collected.
Based on the result of the study, goemat made from abaca fibers is effective in minimizing soil erosion as its lessen the mass of eroded soil collected in the trap. Researchers concluded that areas without geomat. The geomat that were manually made had an estimated cost of Php. 13,247.00.
