Charlotte and Peter Fiell are among the world's bestselling design writers and are internationally renowned authorities on the history, theory and criticism of design. The Fiells met through their studies at Sotheby's auction house in London having both attended, at different times, the prestigious Sotheby's Works of Art Course. Prior to this, Charlotte studies art history in Florence to this, Charlotte studies art history in Florence at the British Institute and later gained her BA (Hons) in the History of Drawing and Printmaking with Material science from Camberwell College of Arts, while Peter, who had moved to London from Canada, studied on other Sotheby's courses, interned in the Furniture and Interiors Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and later worked for a London-based antiques dealer. In the late 1980s the Fiells opened a gallery in London's fashionable King's Road, specializing in mid-century furniture and applied art, and through this acquired a rare hands-on knowledge of modern design.

In 1991, the Fiell's first book was published by Thames & Hudson (A.I.A. in the USA) entitled Modern Furniture Classics since 1945, to widespread acclaim. Shortly after this, Peter received an MA in Design Studies from Central St Martins College of Art and Design, London, and the Fiells decided to concentrate their efforts exclusively on communicating design more widely through book authorship, exhibition curation and teaching. Since 1990, the Fiells have written and edited over 40 books. Since then they have written a number of key design titles including Plastic Dreams: Synthetic Visions in Design (2010, Masterpieces of British Design (2012) and Chairs: 1000 Masterpieces of Modern Design (2012).
