The Assessment of the overview of the residents of Barangay Luz, Cebu City regarding earthquake awareness and preparedness:::as basis for a proposed early-warning system

It receives an abundant number of destructive earthquakes especially on areas with active volcanoes and faults. Though Cebu has no active volcanoes and known active faults, it still has no exemption from earthquakes. The most notable and unforgettable quake that affected Cebu was magnitude 6.9 earthquake last February 6, 2012. That earthquake, which comes with a tsunami alert, caused great panic to the public. The panic was not because of the tremor itself but instead, it?s because of the unpreparedness of the public and the subsequent misleading information that was rapidly spread over the city right after the release of the tsunami alert. That event inspired the researchers to assess the overview of the residents of Barangay Luz, Cebu City about earthquake thus the researchers conducted a survey about earthquake awareness and preparedness in the said Barangay on January 16, 2013. Out of 260 respondents, only 16.92% said that they are very much aware and prepared for earthquakes and 71.54% said that they would be willing to attend a seminar regarding earthquake awareness and preparedness. A week after the survey, a seminar with a theme ?LuwassaKatalagmanangAdunayNahibaw-an? was conducted at the Barangay Luz Hall by the researchers with the main speaker, Mr. Robinson Jorgio from PhilVolcs. The researchers also made further studies about how to minimize the unwanted effects brought by earthquakes. One solution is to predict the occurrence of earthquake. However, the researchers found out that as of today, nobody has been able to predict earthquakes reliably enough and early enough to allow the evacuation of threatened areas. Another solution is an early-warning system. Since earthquakes are unpredictable, it is much safer to assume that earthquake can happen anytime and anywhere and the safest approach is to be aware and prepared.
