A study on the applicability of coconut fiber and cassava extract in mortar

Three types of samples are prepared which are named conventional mortar, mortar with less coconut fiber (1%) and more cassava extract (30%), and mortar with more coconut fiber (3%) and less cassava extract (20%). A total of 45 cube samples with 2" x 2" in size are prepared in three groups according to different mixtures proportions. The composition mixture ratio used is 1:3 (sand-cement ratio) and 0.019 cu.m. (standard water ratio). Then, the samples are cured using "flooding" for 7, 14 and 28 days before testing. The compressive strength for conventional mortar was 1389 psi, while for the mortar with .1% coconut fiber and 30% cassava extract was 1367.2 psi. The result obtained showed that the mortar with 1% (4.05 grams) coconut fiber and 30% (1065 grams) cassava extract showed higher compressive compared to conventional mortar. It has increased by 11.65%. From the result of the experiments the researchers concluded that the best mixture is the one with .3% coconut fiber and 20% cassava extract. The addition of coconut fiber and cassava extract in mortar can cause improvement in the development of compressive strength. Particularly, the mortar with more coconut fiber and less cassava extract.
