A study on the adequacy of parking areas in cit-university: as basis for recommendation for improvement

Parking facilities are of great importance to large institutions such as schools, churches, offices, hospitals, shopping centers, museums or other tourist attraction or places. When it comes to on-campus parking, there is no such thing as ?one-size-fits-all? approach. Educational institutions such colleges, where vast numbers of students exist, a sufficient supply of parking facilities are of great importance. The parking problem can be different in each case to another and the parking problem solution will also vary.
The CIT ? University enrolment is continuously increasing for the past years. Along with this increase in population is also the increase of vehicles entering the school premises. At present, there is a need to accommodate all of these vehicles entering the school which varies from motorcycles, and automobiles/cars. The researchers had observed that the parking areas have become congested. In this connection, the researchers chose to study the adequacy of the parking areas in CIT ? University.
The main purpose of the study was to determine the adequacy of the existing parking areas located inside CIT ? University campus as basis for improvement and to answer the following questions:
1. What are the common inconveniences encountered by vehicle owners?
2. Do vehicle owners feel safe in parking their vehicle inside the campus?
3. What improvements can be made in the existing parking areas?
4. Is there a need to construct additional parking areas?
Based on the results of the surveys, car and motorcycle users experience problems regarding the availability of parking spaces and the parking area?s convenience. Vehicle owners pointed out that the CIT ? University parking areas are inadequate in terms of space allocation because they spent time looking for an available space. It can be noticed that these problems are encountered by vehicle owners during peak hours where the parking areas have reach its maximum capacity. Motorcycle users on the other hand are concerned regarding their designated parking area. Many motorcycle users said that their vehicles are parked in the most difficult position that maneuvering in or out the parking space is tricky. Most parking areas are designed to have maximum capacity, and sometimes convenience of its users is sacrificed. All other problems of vehicle owners can be considered interrelated with each other. The researchers found out that the parking areas are in need of improvements, in terms of capacity, convenience, and safety.
The following recommendations were raised and addressed to the school administration.
1. Vertical expansion of parking areas.
Since the CIT ? University has limited space; expansion of parking areas will only be possible vertically. Constructing multi-storey parking will alleviate the problems in terms of the availability of parking. This can be constructed in front of the academic building. A proposed two-storey parking area is attached in Appendix A.
2. Proposed Environmental Shade
Most users complain regarding the incapacity of the parking areas to provide shade during warm seasons, therefore, providing environmental shade could at least answer this problem. While providing convenience to its users, this proposed environmental shade could improve the parking area?s aesthetics. This environmental shade is in a form of trellis using vines as covering. This area is attached in Appendix A. This can be constructed near the main building.
3. Installment of Security cameras
Since safety and convenience are the main concerns of the parking area users, installment of security cameras would increase their confidence during and after parking. CIT ? University?s population has been increasing lately and security personnel could not be deployed to each area, therefore, providing security cameras is truly an option to be considered.
4. Re-painting of markings and adding of signage to provide instruction to vehicle owners during parking.
Instructional signage should be repainted or put up to allow vehicle users to have proper parking with ease.
