Stressors, personality types and levels of depression among selected first year college students

But if this prolonged sadness had taken over, one suffered from depression. Especially, if an individual with susceptibility to depression would undergo a major shift in his life. These first year college students who were still adjusting to their new environment and those living away from their families were vulnerable to depression. Their levels of depression were suggested to have been affected by the personality traits had an implication during college adjustment. Thus, this study was conducted to explore the role of personality on the levels of depression among first year college students of Cebu Institute of Technology- University which sought answer to the following: (1) the profile of the respondents in terms of age and place of origin, (2) the individual's prevailing personality: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuraticism (3) level of depression of the individual, (4) the contributing factors of depression and (5) what intervention program could be proposed. The data were gathered through the use of Qualitative Research Method. It involved research made interview guide questionnaire which was used during the interview. The gathered data was transcribed and the information provided by the research participants was kept confidential. Standardized expert tools were used to gather more information about the research participants. Findings of the study showed that personality had a link to levels of depression, but it depended on how certain trait was extremely manifested in an individual and its interaction with the presenting stressor. In-depth interview conducted to the research participants and with the use of thematic analysis, themes emerged during the coding process and these were homesickness, academic struggle, parental concerns, peer relations and feeling of inadequacy. This study illustrated the role of personality and other factors of depression manifested among first year college students.
