The 110 essays in this collection were selected from many hundreds that I wrote and published for my "Penman" column in the Philippine Star between 2000 and 2019... I decided to choose my more lighthearted pieces to entertain the reader and afford him or her a moment of relief and refuge, to remind ourselves that a gentle smile can be as precious and hard-won as a triumphal scream. Butch Dalisay (Dr. Jose Y. Dalisay Jr. to his students and colleagues at the University of the Philippines) has written his "Penman" column in the Philippine Star since 2000 and has published over forty books of his stories, plays, and essays, with six of those books receiving the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle. More than twenty of his screenplays have also been produced. In 1998, he was named to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Centennial Honors for the Arts list. <br/><br/>He taught English and creative Writing as a Full Professor at UP, where he served as Chairman of the English Department, Director of the UP Institute of Creative Writing, and Vice President for Public Affairs. He retired from UP in January 2019 and was appointed Professor Emeritus shortly after. <br/><br/>He collects vintage fountain pens, typewriters, antiquarian books, midcentury paintings, and all things Apple. He lives with his wife June (a.k.a. Beng in the columns) on the UP campus. |
