Summary, etc This paper contains the investigative study of home buildings by a seismic diagnosis method in Barangay Luz, Cebu City. The general information about the study has been introduced and the results of the seismic diagnosis of the buildings are discussed herein. Factors affecting seismic resistance of the ten randomly selected buildings included the construction quality and material used was investigated and presented. The 10 buildings are located in Barangay Luz since it is one of the most common places in Cebu which has the most common number of poor quality buildings.
The statement aims at how safe the building is when earthquake load occur. This study was conducted only for 10 months from June 2012 until March 2013. The research cited websites, articles and books from structures (sixth edition), which are relevant to the present investigation. The related literature also discussed about what will happen to a certain structure when there is occurring earthquake load. The structure or the building type and the level of investigation were also discussed under the related literature.
The building type including the material used, formulas and calculations of the 10 randomly chosen buildings were drawn and presented by using the seismic diagnosis method through Microsoft Excel. During the investigation, most of the second floor walls are made up of plywood and first floor walls are made of reinforced concrete hollow block.
The materials are in good quality but it was not properly done during construction. The result and analysis were used to evaluate the level of building safety. It was found out that most of the investigated houses are not safe against seismic or earthquake load. The researchers recommended to use seismic retrofit to strengthen the walls and so that the walls can fully resist the seismic load.
