Summary, etc Machine Translation (MT) nowadays has been applied commonly to major and international languages (e.g. English, German, Chinese, French, Japanese, etc.). Here in the Philippines where translation is not fully developed, there have already been researches concerning on translating Tagalog (national language) to English and vice versa and translation from Tagalog to other dialects in the country. This research aims to be of great contribution on the growth of Machine Translation in the Philippines specifically, to uplift the Cebuano (second most spoken dialect) in the field of research. Furthermore, this research is in deep interest to study Cebuano and Japanese languages, scrutinizing the inter-lexical, inter-morphological and inter-syntatic relationships among the languages. Viewing it in a big picture, this research tries to fill in the development of Machine Translation world.

The research is entitled JACOM Bi-directional Cebuano-to-Japanese Machine Translator. This system translates sentences from a Cebuano text to Japanese and vice versa. It adopts the rule-based (via Interlingua) and example-based approach of translation. The overall process includes interpretation and analyses of all the features of the text which requires in-depth knowledge of grammar, semantics, syntax, idioms, etc, of the source language and the target language as well. A dictionary in a database is built to include single and compound words, and common phrasal expressions of both languages. These large corpuses of data are used for retrieval of word equivalents and language structure rules within the process of translation. Issues like word-sense ambiguities are somehow aided by providing a set of possible translations and let the user decide the most appropriate translation candidate.

Full understanding of Cebuano and Japanese language is imperative through the course of the research since these languages contain an unparallel grammar structure. Morphological distinction must be taken into deep consideration to generate accurate and reliable results.
