Summary, etc It is important to achieve security in our lives especially in our own homes. Despite the confidence of one?s alertness to every emergency, there is still a need for precautionary procedures. Taking this study into focus to the homes that need to be assessed, if these can withstand against nature?s prevalent effects like earthquake loads. That is why through this study, safety to the houses will be provided. These safety methods are called retrofits. Retrofitting the structures shall strengthen the stability and shall be able to resist forces of nature. Not only that, it shall lengthen the life of the structure for a long period of time.
Having Barangay Luz as the area of the investigation of this study, selected two-storey low-cost houses were investigated. It was taken into account the structural details of each house, which includes their specific measurements. The materials used and the orientation were also noted.
Stability and strength of each house was checked by the use of these data and be analyzed, guided by the National Structural Code of the Philippines 1992 (NSCP 1992). The NSCP 1992 shall take part in identifying the approved standard specifications of a structure. This contains guidelines that are inclined to mathematical estimation that shall be solved and analyzed quantitatively. Earthquake loads were computed based on the formulas given by the NSCP 1992 Specs. The values obtained by these computations shall be compared to the standard loads and description of a specific structure can resist.
As we all know, most of the residential houses in the Philippines were not technically engineered. That is why most of these are prone to the destructive forces of nature.
The study showed that 100% of the investigated houses are not capable to resisting the earthquake loads.
These houses must be retrofitted so that it can withstand the seismic forces. The use of different methods of retrofitting was introduced to each houses investigated basing on its quality, effectiveness and cost. The use of different methods of retrofitting, specifically, the retrofit method of wire mesh, shotcrete and steel bracing system were considered in the recommendation for the houses.
