Thesis (Master of Arts in Nursing, major in Community Health in Nursing) -- Southwestern University, March 2009.

Objective and Scope

This study determined the knowledge and attitude of young adult mothers on herbal medicine. The study utilized a quasi ? experimental design to determine the significant difference between the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge of young adult mothers. To determine the relationship between the profile and the knowledge and attitude of young adult mothers on the use of herbal medicine. A total of 42 young adult mothers were involved in the study. A researcher made tool was utilized for pre-test and post-exam.

Findings

Most of the respondents belonged to 25-35 years old married majority are housewives and are in high school level and most have a monthly income of Php 5000 and below. The pre-test level of knowledge has a weighted mean of 8.976 while the post test score has a weighted mean of 14.452. On the attitude of young adult mothers on herbal medicines, very good attitude was shown n bothh psychological and socio-cultural aspects.
The top most herbal medicines used by the young adult mothers were bayabas, ampalaya, bawang, lagundi.
There was a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge of young adult mothers. However, there is no significant relationship between the profile and the level of knowledge as well as the profile and level of attitude.

Conclusion

Pre-test and post-test level of knowledge of young adult mothers differs. Lectures aided with handouts, pictures, and actual herbal plants increase the knowledge of young adult mothers. Age, gender, occupation, educational attainment and monthly income are not determinants in the level of knowledge and attitude of young adult mothers.

Recommendations

The proposed herbal medicine brochure should be reproduced and disseminated to target cllients.

The opening chapter of this thesis is structured to give a general background in the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol, using nitrous oxide as oxidant (BTOP). [Fe, AI]MFI zeolite catalyst, which exhibits superior performance in terms of activity and selectivity in the BTOP reaction, is described. Furthermore, a literature overview of several propositions on the nature of the active sites in the [Fe, AI]MFI catalyst for the BTOP reaction is presented. However, recent investigations have shown strong indication that extra-framework iron species in the [Fe, AI]MFI catalyst are the catalytically active constituents in the BTOP reaction. These developments form the backbone of this study, which utilizes 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy as the primary characterization technique to investigate the active iron species in the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol.

Objective and Scope
This study developed into the knowledge and practices of multipara mothers on breastfeeding at Cebu City Medical Center, Cebu City. The findings served as basis for proposed prenatal class programme. The following specific questions were answered, namely, what is the profile of the multipara mothers in terms of their age and educational background; what is the level of knowledge of multipara mothers on breastfeeding? ; what is the level of practices of multipara mothers on breastfeeding? ; is there a relationship between knowledge and practices of multipara mothers on breastfeeding? And what class program can be proposed to prenatal mothers of Cebu City Medical Center?
It was hypothesized that there is no significant relationship between knowledge and practices of multipara mothers in Cebu City Medical Center.
The study utilized the descriptive survey method. The main tool for data collection was the questionnaire. Interview of the respondents were done to clarify responses and it was conducted in Cebu City Medical Center, Out-Patient department and Obstetrical Ward. A total of 110 multipara mothers were involved in the study.

Findings
Majority of the respondents belong to age range from 21-25. The multipara mothers visiting the CCMC OPD have varied educational background. Majority were in high school level.

Level of Knowledge

Of the 10 statements concerning knowledge on breastfeeding, there were 9 statements in which respondents were highly knowledgeable and 1 statement in which there was low knowledge. The knowledge level of multipara mothers has a mean 1.79 and this was categorized as highly knowledgeable.

Level of Practice
Drawn from 10 statements about practices on breastfeeding, 7 practices on breastfeeding were always performed by the respondent and 3 of which were sometimes practiced. The practices in breastfeeding had an average mean of 2.49 and were categorized as always, since it is within the range of 2.41-3.00 as its legend.

Relationship Between Knowledge and Practices

The Pearson r and t-test were used and revealed a value of 6.82, which is greater than the table value 1,982. Thus, the hypothesis was rejected which means that, there is a significant relationship between knowledge and practices on breastfeeding.

Conclusion
Multipara mothers at the Cebu City Medical Center are responding to the government?s massive campaign on breastfeeding. However, their knowledge and practices need to be sustained by health authorities with the support of the local government unit.

Recommendations
1. The Cebu City Medical Center-Out-Patient Department should implement the proposed programme for prenatal mothers to enhance breastfeeding for newborns.
2. A further research study should be conducted focusing on the factors that hinder sustenance of breastfeeding program in Cebu City Medical Center.
3. Further study is recommended with more respondents in the different barangays of Cebu City.
